Keyhole Reservoir, an impoundment of the Belle Fourche River, was formed by the Keyhole Damproject of the United States Bureau of Reclamation, completed in 1952. The reservoir has a total capacity of 334,200 acre-feet and water surface of 13,700 acres, which provides storage for irrigation, flood control, fish and wildlife conservation, recreation, sediment control, and municipal and industrial water supply. Although located in Wyoming, the reservoir’s waters are allocated by compact to go 90 percent to South Dakota and 10 percent to Wyoming. The state park features multiple campgrounds, a concessionaire-operated marina, fishing and other water recreation.

Antelope, whitetail deer and wild turkeys are often seen in the area. The lake is one of the better places in the state to go after the elusive walleye and northern pike. Keyhole State Park is situated along the southeast shore of Keyhole Reservoir and offers excellent fishing for walleye, catfish, small mouth bass and northern pike. Keyhole is also a mecca for both resident and migrating birds with approximately 225 species that can be observed in the Park or within a mile of the park boundaries. During the summer the most abundant species include the White Pelican, Osprey, Common Yellowthroat and Savannah sparrow. Winter birds that are commonly observed in the area include Bald Eagles, Red and White-breasted Nuthatches and Red Crossbills. Visitors have the opportunity to view many types of wildlife including mule deer, white-tailed deer, and wild turkeys.
