The northern edge of the Rocky Mountains runs the western side, mostly the Bitterroot Mountains. The majority of Montana is Great Plains, 60%.
Population in 2006 997,670 increase of 3.7% over 2000. Unemployment is 3.1%. State personal income tax is 1%-6.9%, with no sales tax.
Granite Peak in the Bitterroots is the highest point at 12,799 feet and the lowest is 1800 in the Kootenai River. Montanas coldest recorded temperature was -70 degrees F. Brrrr Less than 40% of the lands in Montana is held by Federal or state, public access lands.
Largely an agricultural state with some lumber and mining thrown in, it is rich in aesthetic resources; Glacier National Park with the Going to the Sun highway is likely the grandest touring road in America. The Missouri breaks, Little Bighorn national monument and Bighorn canyon and vistas to be had. Rich in Native American culture and renowned American history.
